John's story

Photo - John

In 2002, John decided to be tested following continuing liver pains. He was shattered when tests revealed he had contracted the virus.

He believes he must have been previously infected for around 30 years following intravenous drug use. He gave up alcohol and smoking and took care of himself by using herbs and being careful with his diet.

Having hepatitis C led John to form an informal, occasional support group in North London, “C-Positive Action” until the beginning of 2006. He was so concerned about the lack of awareness about hepatitis C in the UK that he sought funding to start the HCV Aware red/yellow ribbon campaign (now available from the Hepatitis C Trust)

John embarked on a year of treatment in 2006 and is now undetectable.
